Palpitations

What it is: Heart palpitations occur when you become unusually aware of your heartbeat, which may feel like it is racing, fluttering, pounding, or skipping beats. This sensation can be felt in your chest, neck, or throat and may last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes.

Common causes:

  • High stress, anxiety, or intense physical exertion
  • Lack of sleep or fatigue
  • Consumption of caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, or certain medications

Self-care:

  • Practice relaxation techniques to manage stress and anxiety.
  • Ensure adequate rest and avoid known triggers such as caffeine, alcohol, and smoking.

When to seek help:

Go to the nearest hospital immediately or call 102 for an ambulance if palpitations are accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting. Visit a health post, PHC, or hospital if your palpitations recur frequently, last longer than a few minutes, or if you have a personal or family history of heart conditions.

If symptoms suggest a serious emergency, call 102 for an ambulance where available.
