Indigestion

What it is: Indigestion is a common discomfort in the upper abdomen or chest that usually occurs during or after eating and drinking. It can cause a burning feeling, an uncomfortable sense of fullness, bloating, belching, or acid rising into the throat.

Common causes:

  • Eating rich, spicy, or fatty foods
  • Drinking caffeinated beverages or alcohol
  • Smoking, stress, or pregnancy
  • Certain medicines, including anti-inflammatory painkillers

Self-care:

  • Avoid eating meals within 3 to 4 hours of sleeping.
  • Reduce your intake of tea, coffee, alcohol, and heavy foods.
  • Keep your head and shoulders raised on pillows while resting.

When to seek help: Call 102 or go to a hospital immediately if chest pain feels heavy, tight, or squeezes into your arm, neck, or jaw, or if you have trouble breathing. Visit a health post, PHC, or hospital if indigestion is persistent, or if you experience difficulty swallowing, continuous vomiting, bloody stools, unexpected weight loss, or a stomach lump.

If symptoms suggest a serious emergency, call 102 for an ambulance where available.
