Joint Pain
What it is: Joint pain is discomfort, aching, or soreness felt in one or more joints, such as the knees, shoulders, hips, or hands. It is a very common symptom that can affect people of all ages, though it occurs more frequently as body tissues age.
Common causes:
- Sprains, strains, or minor soft tissue injuries from intense activity
- Long-term joint conditions, including wear-and-tear or inflammatory arthritis
- Joint sac inflammation (bursitis) or hormonal shifts, such as perimenopause
Self-care:
- Rest the affected joint, but avoid keeping it completely still.
- Apply a ice pack wrapped in a towel for up to 20 minutes every few hours.
- Consult a pharmacist or health professional regarding suitable pain relievers.
When to seek help:
- Visit the nearest health post, PHC, or hospital immediately if you experience severe pain after an injury, cannot walk or put weight on the joint, notice a deformity, or have hot swelling with a high fever, chills, chest pain, or skin rash. Call 102 for an ambulance where available.
- Consult a health worker if pain interferes with daily activities or sleep, worsens after two weeks of home care, or causes morning stiffness lasting over 30 minutes.
