Cough

What it is: A cough is a natural bodily reflex that helps clear irritation, fluid, or foreign particles from your throat and airways. It commonly resolves on its own within three to four weeks.

Common causes:

  • Viral infections like colds or flu
  • Acid reflux or heartburn
  • Airborne allergies
  • Irritants such as tobacco smoke or fluid draining from the nose

Self-care:

  • Get plenty of rest and stay hydrated by drinking adequate fluids.
  • Sip warm water mixed with lemon and honey to soothe your throat (never give honey to children under one year old).
  • Consult a pharmacist about safe over-the-counter options, such as pain relievers or throat lozenges, to ease discomfort.

When to seek help: Visit your nearest health post, PHC, or hospital if your cough lasts longer than three weeks, or if you have a weakened immune system or unexpected weight loss. Seek urgent medical care or call 102 for an ambulance immediately if you have trouble breathing, chest pain, severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, or if you are coughing up blood.

If symptoms suggest a serious emergency, call 102 for an ambulance where available.
